THE CHALLENGE
GHG Protocol LSR Standard — 1 January 2027
The Land Sector Removals Standard requires primary, field-level data for all companies with significant land-sector activities. The infrastructure you build in 2026 is what your auditor signs off on in 2027. Secondary emission factors will not conform.
SBTi FLAG v1.2 — in force March 2026
FLAG-designated companies, including food & beverage processors and retailers must set Absolute Reduction targets and track progress with primary data from 2027. If you sit in a designated sector or carry more than 20% land-based Scope 3 emissions, FLAG applies.
CSRD limited assurance is tightening
Under limited assurance the auditor has to confirm that Scope 3 data is credible and traceable. Secondary factors based on national averages typically fail this test. Primary, field-verified data gives them something to trace; a regional average does not.
Farmer engagement is the bottleneck
Most supply chain sustainability programmes fail at farmer onboarding. Compliance-first asks produce low engagement and unreliable data. You need a model that gives farmers a reason to participate before you ask them to disclose anything.

Field boundaries and field identity, the practices claimed with dates, the basis of any emissions figure, the sampling design where soil carbon is claimed, laboratory records, and a traceable link from farm to product. What usually fails assurance is not the number but the absence of that chain behind it.

Adoption metrics - hectares enrolled, percentage cover cropped, do not establish an outcome. An outcome claim needs a measured baseline, a defined scenario, a stated uncertainty and a resolution at which the claim holds. A claim made finer than its evidence is the standard route to a challenge.
